Brunch: the perfect time to have breakfast at the weekend. It might just be me, but I’ve always found that breakfast foods can be eaten at any time of the day and it’s always sooooo satisfying. I went to The Modern Pantry in Clerkenwell with my boyfriend and his sisters and cousins and we had a lovely morning meal.

Even though it was pouring with rain, Clerkenwell was so pretty. The Modern Pantry is tucked away, a short walk from Farringdon tube station. Inside, it’s open, light and airy and they seated 8 of us comfortably. We had booked as being such a large group is risky business when it comes to food, but you know how sometimes places literally squeeze you in between tables so you end up feeling like a massive table of strangers? Didn’t happen here which was a good start.

I sat there pondering the menu for hours a short while as there are some delicious options. I was stuck between the Halloumi & Spinach or Bacon & Mushroom breakfast. Eventually I went with halloumi because it’s not something I’d had for breakfast before.

My brunch was absolutely delicious. The halloumi was cooked perfectly and the eggs…OMG the eggs were incredible. I wish I took a picture of the yolk pouring over the bread now, but I was too busy eating it 😉

Pretty Pomegranate Porridge

Everybody agreed that their brunch was amazing. Everything looked beautiful and tasted just as good as it looked. (Don’t you hate when something looks great and then tastes bland? Such a let down!) One thing to note is that the portions are deceiving, to me it looked like a good size but I couldn’t actually finish it all! I was stuffed! It was so good that I wanted to eat it all but it was never gonna happen.

The only thing that let The Modern Pantry down was the service. It certainly wasn’t terrible, but it seemed like they couldn’t handle a larger table, teas/coffees were delayed or the wrong ones were brought out. It’s not a big complaint at all but it’s a little bit of a pain when everybody has their tea or coffee, and you’re sitting there like a lemon waiting for yours to arrive 10 minutes later.

Here’s a little glimpse of everybody’s brunch.

THE LOWDOWN

Best bits? The original brunch options left me struggling to decide – they all looked so interesting. I think any option would have been fantastic (according to the consensus of the table!)

Would I go back? Yes, but maybe in a smaller group.

Would I recommend it? Yes. If you’re looking for a reasonable, intriguing and tasty brunch, look no further.

Who is it good for? Go here if you like to feel quite fancy but don’t want to fork out all your cash.

Budget? I paid £13 for a large breakfast and a mocha.

I really did like it here and although the service wasn’t brilliant, I do think this was purely because we were a large table and the floor was full otherwise. Creative, delightful food and a lovely atmosphere. What do you think you would choose to eat at The Modern Pantry?

This brunch menu seems delicious and also healthier than other brunch menus I’ve come across. The brunch you ate looks great but my favourite if I were there to choose would be the pomegranate porriage. Tasty!

Ugh that looks amazing. I typically do a roast on Sundays or just a series of bloody mary’s but perhaps it’s time to hit up a proper bunch spot! Thanks for sharing this.

Those dishes look amazingly delicious. I would particularly like to try the pomegranate porridge. I like pomegranate and porridge separately and want to try out how the flavors come out when they are fused into one dish.

  • These dishes look amazing!!! I love a good brunch on the weekend, we normally do a late breakfast on Saturdays.

  • The pomegranate porridge looks so good. Everything in the modern pantry brunch looks so tasty!

This definitely looks great and the best part is that you didnt have to cook for yourself.

  • Very nice ideas for breakfast! These look so gorgeous and incredibly delicious!
